Brands in social media

A post at Search Engine Watch broth up the topic of how to think when considering to use and work with social media to increase your brand value. Social media has become one of the hot buzz words in later years. Example of social medias are: forums, communitys, wikis and message boards, basically places were people meet other people and interact. Some part of it could be considered as user-generated content. Many industry newspapers and sites praised social media and user-generated content for being the future.

Social mediaWell, its big alright, but in my opinion not meant for all companies or brands. One thing I liked about the post was how they pointed towards a very crucial point… be humble and don’t disturb the users, they can and will break your brand if you take to much place or irritate them. You are on their ground, taking part of their social time and the word travels fast in social medias. People like these mediums cause it enables them to connect, be social and meet new people. They are in one kind of mood, their free time and don’t want to be disturbed.

One of the biggest social sites today is probably Facebook. There have been many sites before and still are. But lately Facebook have made some big mistakes, and received critics. But its only naturally when they are the dominant for the time. And its been talk that they loose user. In the ever changing climate of the web that is just inevitable.

I think Facebook was the start for many into the social online space. Now they know how it work, they want to find other more niched places depending on their interest. Facebook is the massmedia, and the other will (is?) probably make out about 90% but with a very low number of users each. Its the Long Tail once again!!
